WASHINGTON STATE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

The Washington State Department of Transportation Local Programs Division has been working with cities and counties in the development of safety plans. Those safety plans are data-driven and use risk factors to prioritize locations for safety improvements. WSDOT provide technical assistance to help those agencies review their crash data and to prioritize the crash types and causes to address. WSDOT help them to identify risk factors and give them feedback on their plans as they draft them. If you are interested in a public agency perspective, or in some technical assistance as you go through and identify those kind of factors, WSDOT would be happy to provide that help for you.

REDUCING TRANSPORTATION GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS

Learn about how we are working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the state.

WSDOT is implementing elements of the 2021 Washington State Energy Strategy, which identifies a two-pronged approach to reduce transportation sector emissions:

  • Move people and goods more efficiently and equitably.

  • Electrify vehicles and switch to low carbon fuels.

ELECTRIFYING VEHICLES AND USING LOW CARBON FUELS

Decarbonizing transportation requires that vehicles use fuels that don't emit greenhouse gas emissions. Making the switch to new fuels requires accessible and affordable charging and refueling infrastructure with incentives to support rapid adoption.

STATE TRANSPORTATION CARBON REDUCTION STRATEGY

The Washington State Transportation Carbon Reduction Strategy identifies and summarizes the policies and strategies to reduce transportation carbon emissions being developed and implemented by state agencies, tribes, community organizations, regional and local jurisdiction partners, and industry. This strategy is a requirement to access Carbon Reduction Program funds. Find more about this federal Carbon Reduction Program.

EXPANDING OUR ELECTRIC VEHICLE NETWORK

WSDOT is launching a pilot program to strengthen and expand the West Coast Electric Highway network by installing electric vehicle (EV) fast-charging stations along highway corridors in Washington state. The program will fund a network of DC fast chargers 40 miles apart along I-5, I-90, and I-82/US 395/I-182. This program provides funding that increases the use of alternative fuels.

PLUG-IN HYBRID WORK TRUCKS

WSDOT is the first state agency in Washington to purchase a plug-in hybrid work truck, a major step in our continuing efforts to reduce our carbon footprint.
